AdBlue User Guide (Updated to 2024)

AdBlue is an exhaust treatment solution that helps diesel engines reduce up to 90% of NOx emissions, meeting Euro 4–5–6 standards. Modern diesel vehicles cannot operate without AdBlue — if the tank is empty, the engine may not start.

Viet Duc Joint Stock Company supplies European Standard AdBlue, certified by VDA and ISO 22241.

If you own a diesel vehicle, understanding AdBlue is essential to reducing your environmental footprint. This crucial fluid not only cuts harmful emissions but also ensures your vehicle complies with today’s strict environmental regulations.

In fact, many modern diesel models will not start if the AdBlue tank is empty!

Let’s explore with Viet Duc JSC everything you need to know about AdBlue in 2024 so you can drive with confidence.

What is AdBlue?

AdBlue is a type of Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) widely used in Europe to reduce harmful emissions from diesel-powered vehicles. Although “AdBlue” is the most well-known brand, other DEF products in different regions perform the same function.

The name “AdBlue” is a registered trademark of the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA).
This means not every DEF system requires the AdBlue brand, but all DEF solutions work on the same principle.

AdBlue is a clear, non-toxic fluid consisting of 32.5% urea and 67.5% de-ionized water. It is stored in a dedicated tank near the diesel fuel tank or in a separate compartment.
Importantly, AdBlue is not a fuel additive; it is injected into the exhaust stream to neutralize nitrogen oxides (NOx), helping vehicles comply with strict standards such as Euro 6.

This technology, called Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), converts NOx into nitrogen and water vapor, reducing the environmental impact of diesel engines.

What does AdBlue do?

AdBlue reduces harmful emissions produced by diesel vehicles.

Since September 2015, under the EU Euro 6 emission standards, all diesel cars must use a form of DEF to meet stringent regulations.

AdBlue works together with the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF):

  • DPF removes particulate matter (soot)

  • AdBlue/SCR reduces nitrogen oxides (NOx)

Not all diesel vehicles require AdBlue. Smaller or older diesel engines may use other emission control systems such as EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation).

Note: AdBlue does not affect CO₂ emissions, which depend mainly on fuel efficiency.

How does AdBlue reduce emissions?

Your vehicle injects AdBlue into the exhaust gases. Ammonia released from urea breaks down NOx through chemical reactions.

This process converts harmful gases into nitrogen (N₂) and water vapor (H₂O).
As a result, AdBlue and other DEFs can reduce NOx emissions by up to 90%, helping diesel vehicles meet strict emission limits.

Is AdBlue toxic?

AdBlue is non-toxic and safe when handled properly.
However, it can be corrosive to certain metals due to its water content and chemical composition.

Are there different types of AdBlue?

There are several types of AdBlue, categorized according to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) under the ISO 22241 series. These standards ensure that the AdBlue you use is effective and produced according to the correct technical specifications.

Modern AdBlue products are typically manufactured in compliance with ISO 22241-1, ISO 22241-2, or ISO 22241-3. If you are unsure which type your vehicle requires, refer to your vehicle’s owner’s manual for accurate information.

For more details about the ISO 22241 standards, you can visit: https://www.iso.org/standard/66408.html

The AdBlue products imported and distributed by Viet Duc Joint Stock Company fully meet the latest requirements for modern diesel engines.

What does the AdBlue warning light mean?

When your vehicle begins to run low on AdBlue, you may see the following warning light (or a similar symbol).

The AdBlue warning indicator usually looks like an icon of liquid being poured from a container.

If the AdBlue warning light appears, it typically means you have around 2,414 km of driving range left. You should refill the AdBlue tank as soon as possible to avoid running out.

How to reset the AdBlue warning light

The only way to turn off the AdBlue warning light is to refill the AdBlue tank completely. Once the tank is full, switch the ignition on for about 30 seconds without starting the engine to allow the system to reset and ensure the warning light turns off.

If the light does not go off, there may be an issue within the system. This is often caused by a faulty sensor, although other problems may also be the reason. Each vehicle model has its own specific procedure for resetting the AdBlue warning light. You can refer to your vehicle’s owner’s manual or check online forums for instructions tailored to your vehicle.

If these methods do not work — or if the warning light remains on — you should seek assistance from a professional mechanic.

What happens if you run out of AdBlue?

Your vehicle will enter “Limp Home Mode”, limiting power and performance.
Once the engine is turned off, it will not restart until AdBlue is refilled.

How to refill AdBlue

  1. Locate the AdBlue tank (usually next to the diesel fuel cap or under the hood).

  2. Use a funnel or no-spill spout to pour the fluid carefully.

  3. Fill to the required level.

  4. Follow any vehicle-specific reset instructions.

Can you pour AdBlue into the diesel tank?

Absolutely not.
If AdBlue is added to the diesel tank, do not start the engine.
Call roadside assistance and have the system professionally cleaned.

What if diesel is poured into the AdBlue tank?

Even a small amount of diesel contaminates the entire AdBlue system and may cause severe, expensive damage.

Do not start the engine.
Call for assistance immediately.
