Shell Omala S4 WE is a premium synthetic heavy duty industrial worm gear oil, formulated using polyalkylene glycol base stocks and a specially selected additive system. This provides superior lubrication properties under severe operating conditions, including enhanced energy efficiency, long service life and high resistance to micro-pitting.
Features & Benefits
1. Long oil life - Save maintenance costs
Shell Omala S4 WE is formulated to provide excellent thermal and oxidation stability, extending oil life and resisting the formation of harmful oxidation products at high operating temperatures.
This helps maintain system cleanliness and prolong maintenance intervals.
Shell Omala S4 WE has the ability to significantly extend oil change intervals compared to conventional gear oils.
2. Excellent abrasion resistance
Shell Omala S4 WE is formulated to have excellent load carrying capacity, helping to extend equipment life even under shock loading conditions.
The oil is also highly resistant to micropitting, providing benefits in gear and bearing life compared to mineral oils.
3. Maintain system performance
Shell Omala S4 WE helps improve energy efficiency and reduce operating temperatures in worm drive applications.
Rig testing shows performance improvements of up to 15% compared to mineral oil-based products and 11% compared to other hydrocarbon-based synthetic oils.
These results are confirmed through testing by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and through practical experience.
Main Applications
1. Closed industrial worm gear systems
Recommended for industrial worm gear reducers operating under harsh conditions such as heavy loads, very low or very high temperatures, or wide temperature variations.
2. Increase system lifespan
Shell Omala S4 WE is particularly recommended in systems that require infrequent maintenance or are difficult to access (e.g. vertical shaft turning gears in wind turbines).
3. Other applications
Shell Omala S4 WE is suitable for lubricating bearings and other equipment in circulating or splash lubrication systems.
Note: Shell Omala S4 WE is not recommended for the lubrication of components made from aluminum or aluminum alloys.
For heavily loaded spur and helical gears, the Shell Omala "G" series is recommended.
For automotive hypoid gears, suitable Shell Spirax oils should be used.
Technical Standards, Approvals & Recommendations
DIN 51517-3 (CLP)
Fully approved by Bonfiglioli

Typical Physical Properties
These properties are typical of current products. Future products may vary slightly to comply with Shell's new standards.
Compatibility & Mixing
1. Compatible with paints & sealing materials
High quality epoxy paint is recommended, as polyalkylene glycol may damage some conventional paints.
Shell Omala S4 WE is suitable for nitrile and Viton sealing materials, although Viton is preferred.
2. Oil change procedure
Shell Omala S4 WE contains polyalkylene glycol and is not compatible with mineral oils or most other synthetic oils.
Particular care should be taken when changing from other products to Shell Omala S4 WE.
The system should be flushed with the minimum amount of Shell Omala S4 WE, run at idle and drained while still warm.
Ideally, seals in contact with mineral oil should be replaced.
After a few days of use, the lubricating oil should be checked to ensure the system is clean and uncontaminated.
Shell Omala S4 WE is not miscible with other polyalkylene glycol oils, so special care should be taken when adding the oil.
