AdBlue User Manual (Updated to 2024)
AdBlue is essential for diesel vehicles, reducing NOx emissions via SCR technology.
Viet Duc JSC proudly supplies high-quality AdBlue in Vietnam.
If you own a diesel-powered vehicle, understanding AdBlue is essential if you want to minimize your car's environmental impact. This crucial solution not only helps reduce harmful emissions but also ensures that your vehicle meets current environmental standards.
In fact, many newer diesel vehicles will not start if AdBlue is missing!
Let's explore what you need to know about AdBlue in 2024 with Viet Duc JSC to drive with peace of mind.
WHAT IS ADBLUE®?
AdBlue is a Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) solution widely used in Europe to reduce harmful emissions from diesel-powered vehicles. While AdBlue is the most recognized brand, other DEF products also perform the same function in different regions.
The name "AdBlue" is a registered trademark of the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA). This means that not all vehicles with a DEF system must use AdBlue-branded fluid, but all operate on the same basic principle.
AdBlue is a colorless, non-toxic solution consisting of 32.5% urea and 67.5% deionized water. This solution is stored in a separate tank, usually located next to the diesel fuel tank or in a separate compartment. It’s important to note that AdBlue is not a fuel additive; instead, it is injected into the exhaust system to neutralize nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, helping the vehicle meet stringent environmental standards such as Euro 6.
This technology, known as Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), converts NOx emissions into nitrogen and water vapor, thereby minimizing the environmental impact of diesel vehicles.
What is the purpose of AdBlue?
AdBlue helps reduce harmful emissions from diesel-powered vehicles.
Since September 2015, under the Euro 6 emissions standard of the European Union (EU), all diesel vehicles are required to use a form of Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) to meet stringent emission regulations.
AdBlue works alongside the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) to minimize harmful emissions. Here's how it works:
- The DPF helps remove fine particulate matter from the exhaust gases.
- AdBlue reduces nitrogen oxides (NOx) through Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology.
Not all diesel vehicles require AdBlue. Smaller or older diesel engines may use other emission control systems, such as Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR). Only diesel vehicles equipped with SCR systems need AdBlue.
It’s important to note that AdBlue does not affect CO2 emissions. CO2 levels are primarily controlled through fuel efficiency, not directly related to AdBlue or the DPF filter.
How does AdBlue work to reduce emissions?
Your vehicle will inject AdBlue into the exhaust gases produced by the engine. The ammonia in the urea breaks down nitrogen oxides (NOx) through a series of chemical reactions.
This means that your vehicle's exhaust will release nitrogen (N₂) and water vapor (H₂O) into the atmosphere instead of harmful gases. As a result, AdBlue and other Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) solutions can reduce NOx emissions by up to 90%.
This technology not only helps minimize the environmental impact of diesel vehicles but also ensures that these vehicles meet stringent emission standards.
Is AdBlue harmful?
AdBlue is a non-toxic substance.
This solution is completely safe when used under the appropriate conditions. However, since AdBlue is a special mixture created for chemical reactions in the vehicle's exhaust system, it should not be used for any other purposes.
Additionally, because the main component of AdBlue is water, it can be corrosive to certain metals.
Is AdBlue a single type?
There are different types of AdBlue, classified according to the standards of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) with the number 22241. These ISO standards ensure that the AdBlue you use is effective and produced according to the appropriate specifications.
Modern types of AdBlue are typically produced according to ISO-22241-1, ISO-22241-2, or ISO-22241-3 standards. If you're unsure which type of AdBlue your vehicle uses, refer to the vehicle's manual for the most accurate information.
For more detailed information about these standards, you can refer to ISO22241: https://www.iso.org/standard/66408.html
The AdBlue product imported and distributed by Viet Duc Joint Stock Company fully meets the requirements for the latest Diesel engines.
What does the AdBlue warning light mean?
When your vehicle starts to run out of AdBlue, you may see the following warning light (or a similar symbol).
The AdBlue warning light in your vehicle may appear as an image of a liquid being poured from a container.
If you see the AdBlue warning light, it means you have about 2,414 km of AdBlue remaining. You should refill the AdBlue tank as soon as possible to avoid running out.
How to Reset the AdBlue Warning Light?
The only way to turn off the AdBlue warning light is to refill the AdBlue tank. Once the tank is full, turn the ignition key on for about 30 seconds without starting the engine to ensure the warning light has turned off.
If the light does not go off, there may be an issue with the system. It is usually a fault with one of the sensors, but it could also be due to another reason. Each vehicle has a specific procedure for resetting the AdBlue warning light. You can refer to your vehicle's manual or look for guidance on online forums for instructions specific to your car.
If these methods do not work – or if the warning light remains on – seek assistance from a professional mechanic.
What Happens If You Run Out of AdBlue?
If your vehicle runs out of AdBlue, it will enter "Limp home" mode.
This mode limits the vehicle’s power and performance, allowing you to safely drive home or to a garage. The vehicle will not restart until you refill the AdBlue tank.
How to Add More AdBlue?
To add AdBlue to your vehicle, you first need to locate the AdBlue tank.
Typically, this tank is located next to the diesel fuel tank, but some vehicles may place it under the hood. If you have difficulty finding it, refer to your vehicle’s manual.
Using a funnel or spill-proof nozzle, slowly pour the AdBlue from the container into your vehicle’s tank.
Make sure to pour enough to fill the tank.
If your vehicle requires a reset after refilling, be sure to follow the instructions in your vehicle’s manual.
Can I pour AdBlue into the diesel fuel tank?
AdBlue is not a fuel additive and must NEVER be poured directly into the diesel fuel tank. If you accidentally pour AdBlue into the fuel tank, do not start the vehicle.
Call roadside assistance and have them tow your vehicle to a garage where a technician can check for damage.
What should I do if I accidentally pour diesel into the AdBlue tank?
Even a small amount of diesel can contaminate the entire AdBlue tank.
This can cause serious damage to your exhaust system, and repairs will be costly.
If you mistakenly pour diesel into the AdBlue tank, the best thing to do is stay where you are and call roadside assistance.
To avoid expensive repairs, do NOT start the engine.
