US energy giant chevron is planning to invest $1 billion in India to build a new technology hub in Bengaluru

The Advanced Technology Center, known as Chevron’s Engineering Development Center or simply “The Engine,” marks a significant milestone for the $200 billion corporation. With 145 years of history, Chevron aims to develop cost-efficient, high-quality energy products for the world while aligning with the trend toward more environmentally friendly solutions.

"This is a groundbreaking decision in Chevron’s history to establish a world-class technology hub that will deliver the innovations necessary for the global energy transition," said Akshay Sahni, who is set to take on the role of head of Chevron India.

He also stated that the company seeks to provide employees with meaningful work, enabling them to contribute to Chevron’s goal of producing affordable energy while building a future with lower carbon emissions.

Many of Chevron's competitors, including Shell, BP, Saudi Aramco, and Sabic, have already established technology centers in India. According to reports, Chevron plans to invest $1 billion over the next 5 to 6 years, aiming to hire 600 employees across fields such as mechanical engineering, construction, petroleum, and computer science by the end of 2025.

The company is finalizing a long-term lease for its office in Bellandur, the IT corridor of Bengaluru. In the meantime, temporary facilities have been arranged, as reported by The Times of India.

The research center, "The Engine," will serve as a global hub to support Chevron's operations by providing advanced digital technology solutions. Sahni stated that the company will focus on building digital labs in areas such as artificial intelligence (AI) and neural networks.

These labs will engage in various activities, such as using AI and machine learning (ML) to study subsurface geology. This research is critical for identifying optimal carbon storage locations and safer, more efficient drilling sites. Additionally, they will work on creating digital twins of complex industrial units. These "digital twins" will facilitate monitoring and transforming Chevron’s global operations, ultimately leading to a more reliable supply chain, the report added.
